🎻 Welcome to my violin (and viola!) studio.

A woman playing the violin

I am an amateur violist and violinist who offers affordable and private violin and viola lessons for all, on the East Side of Detroit (near West/East/Indian Village) and virtually via video lessons.

At this time, I am hoping to take on amateur adult learners of these great instruments, whose goals, I have found, are often at odds with the demands (and the prices) of traditional pedagogy. I tailor my lessons to each individual student so they can develop extremely solid fundamental skills on their instrument, while also pursuing their individual musical goals and aspirations.

My teaching philosophy

A violin atop a pile of sheet music

My approach balances solid fundamentals with creative individual expression. Every student is unique, and it is rare for two students to require exactly the same regimen.

I focus on bringing out the best in each individual student, generally avoiding overly-narrow methods such as Suzuki, while also focusing on oft-neglected but criticial musical skills such as early sightreading and improvisation.

My own genre is Classical, and Classical technique, etudes, and theory are a huge part of my pedagogical method. I am devoted to Classical music not so much because of the repertoire, but because I strongly believe in the immense power of Classical music theory as an expressive language, particularly for amateur chamber music and improvisation. Part of my work as a teacher is connecting students at similar skill levels, and with similar musical goals, to help address the draught of amateur chamber groups across Detroit.

While my pedagogical method is Classically-oriented (which will not surprise anyone who knows that I started on the viola!), I take pride in helping students achieve their individual musical goals, whatever their preferred genre(s) may be.
